« Je m’appelle Takfarinas, je suis né en Algérie, je vis en France, mon identité c’est ma musique et mon pays c’est la planète »

C’est l’histoire d’un doux rêveur épris d’amour et de vie. Celle d’un chanteur culotté qui a bousculé des habitudes, cultive le sens de l’accueil et celui de la fête, sait que le seul moyen sûr pour éviter l’usure, c’est d’ouvrir son cœur à toutes les cultures. Elle commence à Tixeraïne, le quartier Kabyle d’Alger perchée sur des hauteurs. Quand on naît dans une famille de musiciens, inutile de lutter. La musique s’impose comme une radicale évidence.

C’est en 1976 que Takfarinas enregistre sa 1ère bande à Alger. Trois ans plus tard, direction Paris pour tout reprendre en studio. L’album s’appelle « Yebba Rremene ». Ce sera le premier jalon de la carrière de Takfarinas, dès lors définitivement enclenchée : En 1986 son double album « Weithelha » (Qu'elle est belle) et Arrach (Les jeunes) se vend à près de deux millions d'exemplaires En 1994 son album « Romane » est classé 4eme du hit parade des World Music Europe Charts.

Avec son mandol à deux manches, ses passions musicales ouvertes, bondissantes entre tradition kabyle, reggae, chaabi, rap et funk, Takfarinas invente un nouveau concept, osé, ardent, « une nouvelle clé pour ouvrir les cœurs », le Yal.

Une rivière de chanson pailletées de lumière, des ballades rêveuses et amoureuses, des provocations à l’abandon, des appels irréductibles à la danse et des paroles qui chantent l’amour, l’espoir, la déchirure… Takfarinas est véritablement l’ambassadeur de la nouvelle musique Yal, pétillante, ébouriffée, en prise direct avec le futur.


TAKFARINAS BIOGRAPHY

“Born in Algeria, living in France, music is my identity and the planet my country.” If Takfarinas was asked to define himself, these words would suffice. They go to the heart of the man, and unequivocally set out what underpins Honneur aux Dames. This is also his way of demystifying his inner motivations and responding to narrow-minded prejudices. Born in Tixeraïne, in Algeria’s Kabyle region, Takfarinas has lived in france since 1979. “Both cultures are in my veins.” That should be enough to silence those who express perplexity or suspicion at the release of this lengthy double and bilingual album (32 songs, 13 of which are in French with Kabyle versions as well). This project has been his obsession and passion for the last two years. Honneur aus Dames sets in music songs were written by Hocine Hallaf.

The sensitive, well-written lyrics are a perfect fit fos Takfarinas’ impulses and feelings. Clearly, he and Hocine Hallaf were made for each other. The young French songwriter, who is himself of Kabyle descent, has also written lyrics for Jennifer and David Hallyday (his latest album) as well as Louisa Bellaïche’s “Monts et Merveilles” for the Eurovision competition in 2001. The texts he has written for Takfarinas are unmistakably rooted in a profound mutual understanding between the two artists.

Pierre Grosz, one of the leading lyricists of chanson française (Jonasz, Polnareff) wrote Que c’est beau, one of several love songs on Honneur aux dames.

The concept of the album is no marketing ploy, but simply an idea that came to Takfarinas, who was artistic director of most of the album. A last refuge against a often grim world, “A song can come from anywhere”, he says : from love, melancholy, anger or vigilance. In praising women, the singer first of all aims at fervently denouncing indictment and condemnation of men’s callousness and contemps towards women. “Honneur aux Dames” is the singer’s cry of battle for life, tendreness and universal love againts intolerable injustice. But don’t expect him to give any explanations of his songs : “Each listener can projecthis own film; his own images.” To translate this new dream into sound, he invited friends from all over : a Moroccan singer, Hassan Ibda Said (“the first duo between a Moroccan Berber and an Algerian Berber”), rappers (Sté Strausz, Rabbah, the Algerian group MBS and Yin JIAN, contacted in Peking via Internet), the legendray Jamaican duo Sly & Robbie, and R’n’B singer China. The prestigious accompanist – Moktar Samba, Michel Alibo, Karim Ziad, the string section of the Royal Moroccan Orchestra, Norbert Krief, Alain Debiossat – fit in perfectly.

Most of the arrangements are by his faithful collaborator Kamel Benmaghnia (Keyboards), also known under the stage name of Kamel Sahnoun.

Long knows as a renovator of Kabyle music. Takfarinas has new surprises in store with Honneu aux dames : a sparkling torrents of songs including dreamy ballads, songs of love and provocative abandon, and irresistible calls for the dancers combining funk, reggae, rap and chaâbi in that groove of his own that he has named “musique yal”

As Takfarinas often says, “Music is a window by which we can glimpse happiness.”
